Acer 6920G-583 Free Laptop - User Review

I received a ‘free’ Acer 6920G-583 laptop with a mobile broadband contract I signed up for. As part of the deal you get an internet dongle which looks like a memory stick which you plug in to the laptop to access broadband when you can’t get a WiFi signal. The broadband experience is not as good as my fixed land line broadband - the connection keeps dropping on the train for example. It’s not perfect but then again i don’t expect it to be as good as fixed line that runs from my house to the Internet.
Anyway this review is of the laptop!
I was attracted to the Acer 6920G-583 because of its great specification. You always pay more for a laptop than a desktop of the same power so I was thinking of buying a desktop. Gladly the innards of this Acer laptop meant I could be happy with its performance and be mobile too. It’s got an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which is great. Similar but not as good are the Celeron and Pentium dual core processors. The Core 2 Duo is the best, and 2.0GHz model supplied in the Acer is really quite a good one. Celeron’s are the worst of the 3.
The only real problem is Windows Vista, which is really slow! Unfortunately, every laptop and desktop I could find comes with Vista, so this is just the way it is. Apparently as more programs better utilize multi core technology, Vista will come in to its own. So, at least I’m future proofed!
Anyway, 320GB hard drive is a big upgrade from my previous 40gigs, as is 3GB of RAM compared to my old half a GB, plus there are a few other nice things such as an inbuilt web cam. I like to stream movies, watch DVDs and play the occasional game but most laptops have a rubbish built in graphics chip. The Acer however has a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 so I can watch HD media on the large (for a laptop) 16″ HD screen.
Some might say it’s heavy at 3.6 Kg but I don’t notice. If you are smaller and weaker you may find it cumbersome. I do a lot of work from my PC so I’d rather a quick PC, large storage and big screen than light weight. I also like the colour, and the ‘on’ button. If you want something portable I’d suggest a net-book. They are pretty fast, run XP and a very portable, but if you do a lot of work choose a laptop otherwise you will regret it. Having used both, that’s my opinion!

| Review by Luigi (NY United States) 2010-08-23 Purchased this machine especially for the price. And 'good built, runs cool, comfortable keyboard, nice sound and quite running. | Review by T. Fiero (USA) 2010-09-05 A $ 479 ($ 379 recently), this portable and convenient, but is no longer a bargain. Note that a small 512KB L2 cache. There are many entry-level deals on laptops, so shop around for the features you want. If you are not in a hurry, wait six months and get more processing power for the same price.
